I went to college in Port Huron Michigan in the early sixties, there I met Barry Hunwick for the first time. Great athlete, water skier, popular, very good looking, and extremely smart. To the best of my knowledge one or both of his parents were doctors. Then later in 65 or 66 I ran into Barry in Fort Lauderdale, he was then living with Greg Newall the manager and namesake of "Crazy Gregs" directly above the "Elbo Room" I remember him being an excellent dart player at the "Parrot" where they played on a small hardwood board with wooden darts with actual feathered flights. In the evenings we would go to a park and shoot baskets, where I came to realize how good an athlete he actually was. He had the looks of a Hollywood actor, the brains of a Wall Street financial wizard, and the athletic ability of a pro. I never really knew Greg at all and was always in awe like a little kid getting handed a signed baseball by Joe Dimaggio. Then in 88 a friend sent me the article in the paper from Florida (below) I was living in California at the time. He was my first brush with a kind of naive celebrity, seduced by his confidence and persona, I was only 19 and he was simply incomprehensible. Often when thinking about that time I can only shake my head in total bewilderment.

Worked in the “Elbo Room”, Ft. Lauderdale in 1964, also owned and operated my own “Elbo Room” in a small town in south central Virginia from 1979 to 1984. We had the first liquor by the drink license issued in Lunenburg county Virginia. Also worked as a cook in the “Yankee Clipper” in Hollywood Beach in the “Clipper Room” on top and the supper club… The “Polynesian Room” and also “Leonardo’s” Italian Restaurant in Pompano beach. Lenny Lewis was the owner and his son and daughter in law ran the restaurant. Lenny also owned “Lenny’s Lounge” or it may have had the tag of “GoGo” south of Hollywood as I recall. Not sure of the spelling of his first name but if you were around then, you know who I am talking about. Also, do you happen to remember…. The “Pickle Barrel”… The “Sugar Shack”… “Porky’s”… and so many other little bars that were around then… wow… what memories… and do any of you remember the “Hurricane parties” that took place in the Elbo Room back in the day??? There was one in ’64 as I recall, I think it was in late summer of ’64… anyway, quite interesting times.
